Assistive Shopping Service Provided by Marks and Spencer

By Matthew Spellar

On 03/02/2011 I visited the Marks and Spencer main store in Birmingham. I was nervous at first about using the assistance scheme as I had never used it before and was wondering whether the scheme would be good or bad.

I went into the store and went to the customer service desk in the food department and asked for the assistance scheme and whether someone could help me do my shopping that I required. They assigned a man by the name of Chris who asked me what particular items I was looking for; he then took me to the items that I requested. He was ever so helpful as he went out of his way to help me, for example when I wanted some bread rolls the only one on the front of the shelf had that days sell by date on and he went out of his way to look at the back of the shelf to see if there were any packs with longer sell by dates on.

It was very nice to receive such a high level of help and showed that big companies like Marks and Spencer do cater for blind and partially sighted people in their stores.
